On average, about a dozen brand-new video games are added to Steam’s catalogue on a daily basis. And although we believe it to be a positive development, we acknowledge that it may be difficult to keep up with. Unless you play every game launched on Steam, you run the risk of missing out on some potentially intriguing gems buried behind the pile of new stuff to play. So, that is precisely what it is that we have done. If nothing in the news this week piques your interest, we have compiled a list of the top PC games you can play right now on your custom rig PC, as well as a rolling list of the 2022 games that are arriving this year.
Bear and Breakfast
A relaxing management game in which you operate a Bed and Breakfast is presented here. You’re also a bear, by the way. This industrious young bear has discovered a hut in the woods and wants to turn it into a location that is suitable for living in. Therefore, you’ll be designing your little Bed and Breakfast, decorating it and, most importantly, ensuring that your short-term residents are content with their accommodations. Bear and Breakfast is not only about administration; there are also missions, plot threads and an intriguing mystery to solve that is connected to the forest itself. So, you can anticipate going on adventures, having crazy conversations with odd NPCs and perhaps eating some oatmeal as well. If you are a lover of Stardew Valley, this is an obvious pick for you, but if you also like solving mysteries and bears, it’s definitely nice for you too.
Digimon Survive
If you’re a fan of Digimon, you undoubtedly already know that the newest Digimon game has finally been released after what seems like an eternity spent in the “development hell” of the game’s production. This isn’t your typical role-playing game like many recent Digimon JRPGs; instead, it’s more of a visual novel with some light turn-based strategy elements. Because of this, even if you have a passion for strategy, you could find that this is not the book for you because it is really simply a graphic novel (and a pricey one at that). It’s an odd combination, but the graphics are generally lovely, and you can expect the usual branching paths and mind-boggling melodrama that fans of visual novels are used to seeing in their games. It’s an interesting take on the genre, but it doesn’t quite work.
Sweet Transit
Only rail travel is available in the beautiful utopian paradise of Sweet Transit. Therefore, in this Early Access project, you can expect to build railway networks, but don’t mistake it for a Transport Tycoon knockoff (or OpenTT). It’s more of a city-building game, with the development of the lovely towns you’ll be linking depending on the size and efficiency of your train network. You’ll get to customise stations, platforms and services according to the particular requirements of each town, and you’ll need to accommodate both passenger and freight trains. Although the Early Access phase won’t end until the middle of 2023, modding support is currently available.
Hohokum
Since 2014, Hohokum has only been available on the PlayStation. Last week, the game was shown for the first time on Steam at a digital showcase by the publisher Annapurna. This vibrant and calming game aims to guide a kite-like object through absurd realms. There aren’t really any concrete goals in this game; instead, it’s more about taking in unusual sights and experiences. Its description of Steam as “ASMR for your ears and sight” is very accurate; the music, in particular, is delightful.
Blastronaut
Blastronaut, a side-scrolling trade and survival game about mining valuable materials from an eternal, dynamically created subterranean, was released into Early Access. The biomes below the earth are progressively more hazardous. The further you go spelunking, the better the prizes get, but the environment gets more dangerous. It has the feel of a combination between Terraria and Steamworld Dig. Blastronaut is expected to stay in Early Access for “about two years”. During that time, it will get new environments and challenges and a steady stream of improvements and tools that make it easier to get loot.
